On the 2nd September, I took Lily into the Bella Coola Valley to catch the ferry to Vancouver Island. She had been with me for a month and was a great worker. We also took a load of firewood down to my friends at Stuie: they have no pine and like to m ix it with the fir, birch, hemlock and cedar they have down there. The dogs rode in the crew cab and our packs had to be tied on top.
We stopped for an hour or so at the top of The Hill on Highway 20. Sometimes there are late flowers at this time of year. Always the contrast between whatever is growing is dramatic against the burned forest. (The fire was about 4 years ago.)
I found a few late flowers – these are asters.
Some fireweed was also in flower
But most fireweed was turning into its gorgeous fall red.
A chipmunk sat on a log and ate a grass seedhead like a cob of corn. He was incredibly cute.
